Another big feature one can expect to see in iOS 12 is a renewed focus on "iBooks".

Apple has unveiled iOS 12 at its WWDC 2018 conference in San Jose, California.

iOS 12 will be available on all of the same devices as iOS 11, which means it'll be supported on iPhone 5S and above, all iPad Air and Pro models, iPad mini 2 and above and the 6th-gen iPod Touch.

A long overdue feature, iOS 12 finally brings group video calls to the iPhone and iPad. It also integrates with iMessage, so you can invite others in a group to join your call right from iMessage. "With iOS 12, we're enabling new experiences that weren't possible before". You can also hard press this function so you can easily set a time limit for it.

Both Bloomberg and Axios recently reported that Apple's software division wants to focus on performance and reliability issues for iOS 12.

There's also a report from the Wall Street Journal (paywall) suggesting Apple is looking to get back into the advertising business. You tap it, record a custom phrase, and then you can say it to Siri.

Bloomberg reports that there will be updates to ARKit, the framework the company released past year to help developers build augmented-reality apps.

The change, to be included in Apple's iOS 12, will allow iPhones - which have contained NFC-capable chips since the iPhone 6 and 6s were introduced in 2014 - to unlock doors with similar NFC chips as well as talk to certain transit agencies to pay fares, the report said.

This dedicated Apple Events app lets you stream today's event as well as rewatch older keynote presentations. This will include information on how much time you've spent on Twitter or iMessage, as well as what apps are sending you the most notifications. The existing set of Animoji also expands with ghost, koala, tiger and T. rex. Apple is also planning an update to ARKit, its platform for developers to build augmented-reality experiences on iPhone and iPads, which it initially announced previous year.

Hand in hand with the new system, a new file format was introduced: Universal Scene Description (USDZ).

Voice Memos has been redesigned too and it's now available on the iPad. "They beg us to use our phone when we really should be occupying ourselves with something else".

Rick Broida detailed which devices support iOS 12, but the cheat sheet for compatibility is if your device runs iOS 11, it will run iOS 12.

FaceTime will support group calls going forward, with calls supporting up to 32 simultaneous users. Users can also create their own emoji using a new feature known as Memoji, designing emoji to look how they want. You can download the public beta here, although if you're a developer you can already download the developer preview here.
