A source with knowledge of Salah's position on the matter has confirmed this to be correct to ESPN FC, adding that the player is now considering his global future.

Sadio Mane said Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah has the mental strength to bounce back from injury and World Cup heartache, revealing Saturday that he sent him a message of support.

Salah was pictured with Chechnya leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who has been accused of torture, prior to the tournament beginning.

CNN reported that Salah was uncomfortable with the criticism that followed the photo and is unwilling to being used as a political pawn.

Reports criticized Kadyrov for using Salah for propaganda purposes, which the Chechen leader firmly denied.

He handed Salah a decree declaring him a citizen at a dinner in honour of the Egypt team ahead of their departure for Volgograd, where they will play Saudi Arabia in their final group match on Monday.

The 2018 World Cup was meant to be a stage for Mohamed Salah to confirm his place in the upper echelon of world football after an incredible debut season with Liverpool.

The Egyptian FA later on Sunday tried to play down the reports, insisting Salah was still happy, saying: "Reports that Salah wants to leave are completely wrong".

'Mohamed Salah thanked us for the surprisingly warm and good reception, excellent attitude to the team, excellent living conditions and training, ' Kadyrov posted on Russian social network site VK. He is eating and laughing with his teammates.

The forward is Egypt's star player although he missed their opening World Cup game against Uruguay due to a shoulder problem picked up against Real Madrid in the Champions League final. Egypt have no chance of advancing to the World Cup knockout stage.

Prior to the tournament, Salah and his agent were involved in a dispute with the Egyptian FA over Salah's image rights.

But his worldwide future will now be under consideration as a result of the events in Chechnya during the tournament.
