Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a socialist candidate, defeated ten-term New York Congressman Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary Tuesday.

Clyburn, like Pelosi, insisted that Crowley's defeat did not result form the simmering tensions between the mainstream wing of the Democratic party and those who fashion themselves in the mold of Sen.

A national candidate who runs on the same platform on which Ocasio-Cortez and NY gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon are running will not garner meaningful Republican support, even in the age of Trump. Many everyday Americans who are not wealthy and well-connected - teachers, community organizers, hotel and restaurant workers - have been reluctant to run for office, anxious that they didn't have one or more of these qualities.

Her victory earned applause from Bernie Sanders, who said: "She took on the entire local Democratic establishment in her district and won a very strong victory". "She will likely win this race in the general election, she will likely go to Congress and she will likely be a voice for her constituents". "So that's where you see the Democratic Party moving, and I think that certainly doesn't bode well for them and their politics as they continue to move more to the socialist left".

He also cast aside the possibility of any potential adjustments to his campaign strategy.

"She was always up for a good debate, absolutely, but not before hearing someone else", said Fernandez, who was the assistant director of the center at the time.

And while many Ocasio-Cortez supporters criticized media coverage, many had love for Crowley's handling of the loss, including his dedication of a "Born to Run" cover to Ocasio-Cortez. "What a truly special night!"

SNELL: National Democrats have spent millions across the country to make sure progressives who couldn't win in competitive districts didn't survive their primaries. Crowley has represented New York's 14th district since 1999, and hadn't been challenged since 2004. "You're talking about a district that's probably in the top 5% of the most liberal districts in the country". As Democrats lurch toward the failed socialist platform of Bernie Sanders, our Party's prospects of electoral success are secured for many years to come... She also wants to abolish ICE - Immigration and Customs Enforcement - the Homeland Security division that enforces U.S. immigration laws. Insurgent candidates will learn from her incredible ability to succinctly answer interview questions in only 15 to 20 seconds, a fact duly noted by Mika Brzezinski on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" the day following the election. "I think that is, first and foremost, one of the basic elements and violations".

"Our campaign was focused, just a laser focus on a message of economic, social and racial dignity for working-class Americans", she said on MSNBC.

In a simple and symbolic twist of fate, the stunning defeat of Crowley came a day before the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic Party voted on what to do about "superdelegates".

"I think that the election of Donald Trump was a real game changer and I think we can throw out the old playbook", Nixon said Wednesday.

"And say goodbye to your firearms if she gets her way!" he warned.
