Michael Cohen: "My Silence is Broken"

"My wife, my daughter and my son have my first loyalty and always will", Mr. Cohen, Mr. Trump's former personal lawyer, told ABC News' George Stephanopolous. Cohen responded that if he is charged with anything he would defer to his new lawyer in the case, Guy Petrillo, for advice. His home, office and hotel room were raided in April as part of a probe by federal prosecutors in NY into his personal business dealings.

"I would not do or say a thing that might be perceived as interfering with their professional review of the evidence and the facts", Cohen added.

"I put family and country first", he added, signaling that he is willing to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller and prosecutors from the Southern District of NY, even if it does put Trump in jeopardy, Stephanopoulos wrote in a story posted on his program's website early Monday detailing the interview.

"To be crystal clear, my wife, my daughter and my son, and this country have my first loyalty", said Cohen, who is now under investigation for campaign finance violations and bank fraud, The Hill reported, while federal prosecutors are looking into the payment he made to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Attorney Michael Cohen arrives at court in NY last month.

"As an American, I repudiate Russia's or any other foreign government's attempt to interfere or meddle in our democratic process, and I would call on all Americans to do the same", Cohen said.

Prosecutors are investigating Cohen for possible bank and tax fraud, possible campaign law violations linked to the payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, and possibly other matters related to Trump's campaign, a person familiar with the investigation has said.

Cohen did not discuss the Daniels payment with ABC.

Cohen repeated previous denials that he had any involvement with Russian attempts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election, but he refused to criticize the investigation led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller.

"When they [the FBI] searched my hotel room and my home, it was obviously upsetting to me and my family".

"I don't like the term witch hunt", Mr. Cohen said about the Mueller investigation.

Trump has denied any collusion with Russian Federation, calling the investigation a witch hunt, while Moscow has denied meddling in the election.

Cohen also criticized the participants at that now-infamous June 2016 Trump Tower meeting arranged to obtain dirt on Hillary Clinton.

"I believe it was a mistake by those from the Trump campaign who did participate", he said.

Trump later told reporters Cohen did a small fraction of his overall legal work. "It was simply an example of poor judgment".

Stephanopoulos said that in several instances, Cohen broke with Trump in characterizing the federal investigations.

"I want to regain my name and my reputation and my life back", he said.
