Justin Thomas doesn't break sweat en route to victory at Firestone

I hit great putts that just were burning the edges. The purse for the Bridgestone Invitational is among the higher victor pools on the PGA Tour at $10 million.

Also the 2014 and 2015 victor at TPC Twin Cities, the 57-year-old Perry matched Hale Irwin's tournament record of three victories in the final edition of the event that started in 1993.

Rory McIlroy made three straight bogeys around the turn, carded 73 and finished seven shots behind, while Ian Poulter putted uncharacteristically poorly and was never a factor after four bogeys in the first seven holes. After opening with 67-71, the 2016 NCAA Individual (and team) Champ while at OR hung up a pair of 67s on the weekend and finished with 17 birdies against nine bogeys, five versus two in R4. "I like to hit driver as much as possible, and this course allows me to do that, and to be aggressive". At the Bridgestone Invitational, he became the 21st player to win a World Golf Championship and a major. A birdie at No. 10 put him three shots behind, but that was all he had.

Tiger Woods, an eight-time victor at Firestone, tried to go out with a bang and ended with a dud.

"Things could have certainly gone better", Woods said.

Thomas fell behind early with two bogeys in three holes, and a 10-foot par save in between from behind the fourth green kept him from falling farther behind.

"I'm glad I finally played well around here", said Thomas, who claimed his first victory in an elite World Golf Championships event on a course where hasn't fared so well in the past.

Thomas could not have asked for a better week.

"I just need to continue to go out and play well tomorrow because I have some really good players chasing me", Thomas said.

Firestone has held tour events since the Rubber City Open in 1954.

For Thomas, it was another confidence-building round as he prepares to defend his PGA Championship title at Bellerive in St. Louis next week.

There may not be a more storybook ending to the 100th PGA Championship than one of golf's young stars completing the career grand slam at age 25. The World Series of Golf began in 1962, and it became an official PGA Tour event in 1976.

Bridgestone shifted its title sponsorship to the PGA Tour Champions, which will bring its Senior Players Championship to Firestone next year.

"I need to drive the ball better", Day said.

At 15 under, Thomas finished four shots ahead of runner-up Kyle Stanley (68), with Johnson and Thorbjorn Olesen (both 64) sharing third at 10 under.

Thomas won for the ninth time in his career and moves to No. 2 in the world, with a shot to regain the No. 1 ranking next week.

"It's really cool", Thomas said.

Pornanong, also seeking her first major and LPGA title, double-bogeyed No. 17 to leave Hall with a three-shot lead down the last.
