According to the rule governing the game in Spain, only three non-EU players are allowed in each La Liga matchday squad.

Malcom has been left out of Barcelona's Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla.

He may not have got on the scoresheet, but Lionel Messi was in the thick of the things, orchestrating the win.

King's Cup runners-up Sevilla took a surprise lead in the traditional curtain raiser to the season against Barcelona when Pablo Sarabia fired home in the ninth minute after Luis Muriel had powered his way through the Barca defence.

Barcelona have taken part in nine of the last 10 Super Cups, but this was the first to take place over just one leg and in a foreign country.

On a day when Barcelona blew hot and cold in the attack, Messi was the beacon of light and energy as he went on to lift his 33rd trophy with the club to become the most decorated player in its history.

"The club's legal department is studying the matter and should FC Barcelona line up with more than three non-EU players, it would present possible ground for withdrawal due to an improper line-up".

But the club could also call upon defender Marlon (Brazil), taking the total up to four.

"I think that Sevilla are professionals and we are professionals".

Though Barcelona do have Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi who hail from outside of the European Union, all three have European Union citizenship with Coutinho recently gaining a Portuguese passport according to reports. "With all the trouble we have had this week with non-EU squad members, they could have warned us before".

MESSI overtook Andres INIESTA who was on 32 trophies.

The 30-year-old has worn the arm-band for the Catalan giants on numerous occasions before he was named vice-captain since 2015.
