Analysts and fans roasted new coach Jon Gruden after news of the trade broke, and Derek Carr tweeted his reaction on Saturday afternoon. The defensive lineman has been seeking a renegotiated contract that would play him like an elite positional player.
The Bears were one of several teams rumored to be in the hunt for Mack, who came with a steep asking price.
Yet even the move in 2017 to move up a spot to trade for quarterback Mitchell Trubisky pales in comparison to the one he pulled off just eight days before the start of the 2018 season. Since 2015, Mack has produced double-digit sacks and was the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2016.
Pittsburgh could have packaged two first-round picks and linebacker Bud Dupree for Mack and matched something similar to what is being reported about the trade. Mack has been a holdout throughout training camp and has racked up the fines while not reporting.
The Jets had outside hopes of landing Mack, but it would not have made a lot of sense for a rebuilding team to deal multiple first-round picks.
