Three children were struck and killed at a school bus stop in Fulton County, Indiana, Tuesday morning, according to Indiana State Police. A fourth child was critically injured and airlifted to a hospital.

Three children hit and killed waiting for a school bus in northern in were all from the same family.

An 11-year-old boy who was not related to the deceased children was airlifted to a hospital in Fort Wayne.

Tony Slocum says the siblings and an 11-year-old boy were struck about 7 a.m. Tuesday, before sunrise, as they were crossing a two-lane road near Rochester to board a Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. bus.

Lowe needed surgery due to internal injuries and multiple broken bones. As children crossed the road to get onto the bus, four children were reportedly hit by a southbound 2017 Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck driven by Alyssa Shepherd.

Shepherd, who had remained at the scene following the incident, was being held on a $15,000 bond. No other students were on the bus.

Indiana State Police Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Fulton County Sheriff's Department, the Rochester School Corporation, the Rochester and Mentone Fire Departments, Lutheran EMS and the Fulton County Coroner's Office.

The area where the crash happened is in the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation. "You're supposed to get on the bus stop and be safe", Ingle said. "We have deployed all school counselors to meet the emotional needs of our staff, students and parents", the school wrote on Facebook. It urged "the community to come together to pray for the families".

"Words can not express the depth of sorrow Janet and I feel, which only pales in comparison to what family, friends, teachers, classmates and community are feeling right now", Holcomb said. "We saw tears today and our hearts just go out to them because most of us have children and we can't imagine the pain that he felt today". "Three - I'm not going to say her name - three of her kids were killed instantly", the neighbor said.

Ingle said there were days Alivia acted more like a mother to her brothers than a big sister, which is why he says it's no surprise that she tried to shield them before they were hit.
