A 12-year-old girl was among two people injured after a gunman opened fire at a mall in Alabama in the run up to Black Friday.
Police in Hoover, Ala. confirmed to Al.com that the suspect was dead following what appeared to be an officer-involved shooting at the Riverchase Galleria.
The shooting occurred following a fight between an 18-year-old and the 21-year-old shooter according to police.
Emergency services at the scene
The 12-year-old girl who was struck by the shooter was a bystander during the incidence. Rector said a Hoover officer "did engage that individual, shot him and he is dead on the scene".
"We want it to paint a very clear picture of what happened tonight", Rector said. She was transported to a different hospital. She was reported in stable condition at Children's Hospital.
Two separate rings of gunshots could be heard inside the mall by witnesses, who described the scene as chaotic with customers screaming and mall staff working to lock down the center, which the Hoover Police Department said is now secure.
"We are working closely with the Hoover Police Department and are grateful for their swift action to contain the situation", said Lindsay Kahn, a spokeswoman for Brookfield Properties, which owns the shopping center.
Hoover is a suburb of Birmingham.
Police said the incident began with an altercation between two teenagers which led to an exchange of gunfire. Our paramedics quickly provided care with expertise.
Local TV news footage showed emergency response vehicles at the scene as police directed shoppers and vehicle traffic out of the area. The mall is the largest in Alabama.
