The 41st president of the United States, George HW Bush, has died at the age of 94.

Announcing the death of his "dear Dad" in a statement on Friday, Bush said: "George HW Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for".

Bush Senior served as the 41st president of the United States.

He also saw his popularity swell with America's success in the 1990-1991 Gulf War, where U.S. forces liberated Kuwait from Iraqi control following an air and ground campaign.

Bush violated his no-new-taxes promise in the second year of his term, cutting a deficit-reduction deal that angered many congressional Republicans and contributed to GOP losses in the 1990 midterm elections.

Bush had also been a World War II hero, Texas congressman, Central Intelligence Agency director and Ronald Reagan's vice president.

"Not only was George H.W. Bush one of the greatest presidents in our nation's history, he also was one of the finest men to serve our country in so many ways".

It was perhaps the high point of Bush's presidency, his approval rating among US voters reaching a record 89 percent, with a fireworks display lighting the night-time sky over Washington to salute the successful mission.

In August 2015, Trump tweeted a dig at the presidency of George H.W. Bush, writing: "The last thing we need is another Bush in the White House".

"In Texas, the family of former President Lyndon Baines Johnson and the LBJ Library issued a statement paying tribute to Bush's ".leadership in public service, military heroism, civility, and commitment to civil rights".

Bush's death came seven months after that of his wife, former first lady Barbara Bush, to whom he was married for 73 years.

Bush was president of the US from 1989-1993 and brought a "dedication to traditional American values" and a determination to make the USA a "kinder and gentler nation", according to a White House biography.

"After seventy-three years of marriage, George and Barbara Bush are together again now, two points of light that never dimmed, two points of light that ignited countless others with their example ..."

George H.W. Bush was an American hero and icon, he was a friend to all he met, he embodied class and dignity.

After retiring from public life, the late Bush joined his successor, Bill Clinton, in raising funds for victims of the 2004 Asian tsunami and the 2010 Haiti natural disaster.

He enlisted on his 18th birthday and was the youngest pilot in the US Navy when he received his wings and went on to fly 58 combat missions. He was defeated by Democrat Bill Clinton.

Mr. Bush had been ailing for some time and in recent years used a wheelchair or motorized scooter.

In 1988, Bush was elected as the 41st President of the United States.
