Its culmination will be a state funeral at Washington's National Cathedral on Wednesday, a day President Donald Trump - who had often clashed with the more staid and centrist Bush family - has declared a national day of mourning.

Trump had the final say over important funeral details, the person said, including providing Air Force One to carry the former president's body from Texas to Washington for the funeral and back to Texas on Thursday for another service and burial.

Among Bush family members in attendance for Monday's ceremony were son and former 43rd President George W. Bush with his wife and former First Lady Laura Bush and son, former Florida governor and one-time presidential candidate Jeb Bush.

His son, former President George W. Bush, was set to join family, friends and aides of the former executive for the flight.

The Deanses were determined to visit the late president Monday because they hold high respect for the office, but particularly because they're "very huge believers" in the Bushes, said Wanda Deans, 67.

But late Monday, after Bush relatives and dignitaries had gone, the president was driven from the White House up to Capitol Hill. Family spokesman Jim McGrath said other Bush family members are expected to be at the Maryland military base for the arrival.

The 41st president died late Friday at his Houston home at age 94. The number is a reference to Bush's place in the roster of America's presidents. The sailors assembled were from the USS George H.W. Bush, the Navy's newest aircraft carrier.

Trump has ordered the federal government to close on Wednesday and both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed on Wednesday in observance.

Sully worked for Bush over the summer after former First Lady Barbara Bush died.


Bush never warmed to Trump, and he had let it be known that he did not vote for him in 2016.

One of Mr Bush's major achievements was assembling the worldwide military coalition that liberated the tiny, oil-rich nation of Kuwait from invading neighbour Iraq in 1991, lasting only 100 hours.

George H.W. Bush, a WWII naval aviator, will be buried this week wearing socks featuring jets flying in formation.
