Modric, who joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 for a reported 40 million euros ($45.40 million), was criticized in his debut season at the Bernabeu and named the worst signing of the year in a poll by newspaper Marca.

"It feels awesome. I'm proud to win this attractive award".

Modric stated this after winning the 2018 Ballon d'Or in Paris on Monday night. "It's something unique for me", Modric said.

Modric, 33, finished ahead of 2017 victor Ronaldo of Juventus and Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann for the prize, leaving Messi, who was fifth, outside the top three for the first time since 2006.

"But, like I told you, I would change all of this for a World Cup".

Prior to the announcement, the diminutive midfielder had won the UEFA Player of the year award in August and The Best FIFA Men's Player award in September.

33-year-old footballer won the award for the first time and he became the third player to claim the award after Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo in a decade.
