Despite the injury, Ashley continued to co-host Miss Universe until the end when she got to congratulate this year's victor, Miss Philippines, Catriona Gray.

Gray - a student of music theory - beat more than 90 contestants from around the globe in the 67th instalment of Miss Universe, which was held in the Thai capital's Impact Arena. However, despite her participation Miss World organization didn't accept transgender participation.

"She didn't just wake up one day and was like, 'I feel like being a woman!' She feels it in herself". "If she can further educate people about what are the needs of the transgender community to get us to be more compassionate towards them..."

"I'm competing because it's what I've wanted to do since I was a little girl", Ponce told Time before the pageant on Sunday.
