Pop royalty Gaga meanwhile won an award in the visual media group for her heart-pounding hit "Shallow" of the blockbuster film "A Star Is Born", and another for best pop solo performance for "Joanne". "I'm in tears with honor and gratitude", she wrote on Twitter after her first win.

The 61st Annual Grammy Awards are broadcasting live from Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT on CBS. Emily Lazar, one of the engineers who worked on the album and won alongside Beck, said onstage that she was the first female mastering engineer to win in the latter category.

Drake won the Best Rap Song Award for "God's Plan" at the 61st Grammys Awards, and his acceptance speech came with a bit of controversy.

Even before the Grammy Awards ceremony started, Lady Gaga proved how great she is with two wins.

Hugh Jackman, an Emmy and Tony victor, won his first Grammy, picking up best compilation soundtrack for visual media for "The Greatest Showman".

By downloading the app, you can also stream the Grammys from your phone or tablet.

Women artists scored nominations in all of the top categories, after being largely muted a year ago: rapper Cardi B, pop diva Lady Gaga, pop futurist Janelle Monae and folk rocker Brandi Carlile are among the frontrunners.

Dua Lipa won her first Grammy for the Silk City collaboration Electricity, which got best dance recording.

"So if you see someone's that hurting, don't look away", she also said in her remarks.

"Shallow" is still up in three other categories, including Record of the Year.

It all began when Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich told The Associated Press in an article published Thursday that by the time Grande and those running the show reached the point where a performance felt possible, she decided against it because she felt it was "too late for her to pull something together".

After her second, for the song named after the superstar's aunt, Lady Gaga called the award "more than me & my family could ever dream of". Despite receiving eight nominations that year - the most of anyone - he went home empty-handed.

Diana Ross, who used her performance to mark her 75th birthday, also got the crowd up with hands in the air. A study released by the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative days before the ceremony found that of the 899 individuals who had been nominated for the previous six shows, 90.7 percent were men. There will be awkward moments, but a planned tribute to Aretha Franklin, which will be performed by Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day, had better be one to remember.
