President Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort is soon to be sentenced. They argued that Mueller went beyond the scope of his mandate to investigate Manafort.

Manafort's defense lawyers responded to the hefty sentencing recommendation by arguing that, due to his deteriorating health condition during his recent months in jail and because he's "truly remorseful for his conduct", U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III should use his authority to issue a sentence "substantially below" that of 19 to 24 years. Mueller is likely to save those conclusions for his final report on the Russian Federation investigation.

In just under a week, on March 13th, he faces a second sentencing hearing in federal court in Washington, D.C. on felony counts that he pleaded guilty to a year ago.

Manafort's attorneys noted he spent 50 hours in proffer sessions with the special counsel for his plea agreement in the D.C. case.

Prosecutors said Manafort repeatedly lied to them in debriefings about several matters, including his interactions with Kilimnik, a translator. "That is not a basis for a lower sentence, but rather a more severe one". They also discussed a peace plan to resolve cross-border hostilities after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Before the sentenced was imposed, Manafort told Ellis, "saying I feel humiliated and ashamed would be a gross understatement". Manafort turns 70 years old on April 1.

Manafort, 69, addressed the court on Thursday evening in Alexandria, Virginia, saying "the last two years have been the most hard of my life". Manafort, according to the filing, owes the government millions of dollars in taxes.

"Someone who is working in the country who has legitimate views on what's happening, they'll meet with them to glean their views", Carpenter said in an interview.

"Paul Manafort's deceit has now extended to virtually everyone he's met, I mean his nose is longer than Pinocchio's at this point", said Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi.

Manafort is scheduled to be sentenced in Virginia on Thursday.

Manafort was convicted after prosecutors accused him of hiding from the US government millions of dollars he earned as a consultant for Ukraine's former pro-Russia government.

Manafort, in addition to Trump's campaign, worked on the White House bids of Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush and Bob Dole.

"Given the investigation's focus on President Trump's campaign, even a blind person can see that the true target of the special counsel's investigation is President Trump, not defendant, and that defendant's prosecution is part of that larger plan", Ellis wrote in a June 2018 opinion that ultimately allowed Mueller to proceed with the case.

Besides Manafort and Gates, four other former Trump associates face charges or have pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the Mueller investigation. He has severe gout, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, psoriasis, arthritis and a potential thyroid problem, his lawyers say.

In an 848 page sentencing memo released last month, the special counsel laid out a pattern of deception that was not done out of necessity, but out of greed.
