Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios' "Captain Marvel" is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes.

Captain Marvel's introduction to the MCU was first teased in the post-credits of Avengers: Infinity War, when Nick Fury spent his final moments of life shooting her a message with a heretofore unseen pager. Overseas, "Captain Marvel" pulled in a massive $302 million, including $89 million in China, representing the fifth-highest global opening weekend ever. Nine of the Top 10 Captain Marvel locations in China were IMAX.

Not even online trolls who tried to tamper with hype surrounding "Captain Marvel' could stop the heroic warrior's ticket sales from climbing higher, further, and faster than anticipated". Its opening weekend performance falls just behind "Black Panther" ($202 million) as the strongest debut for a superhero origin story in North America.

In terms of all films, superhero or not, Captain Marvel had the sixth-best opening weekend of all-time.

Brie Larson took the time to thank some lucky fans who went to see Captain Marvel over the weekend - in a pretty unforgettable way! The newest Marvel movie also continued the studio's streak: Every one of its 21 films has opened at No. 1. Brie Larson, 29, the star of the box office smash, dropped in to surprise some moviegoers.

"Captain Marvel", along with DC Comics' "Wonder Woman" in 2017, has been heralded as a landmark for female representation in superhero movies.

Larson noted last month how movies that are landmarks for representation, like "Captain Marvel", often come with the weight of huge expectations, with a lot riding on their successes or failures.

Captain Marvel is now playing in theaters!
