According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Players has chosen John August, who wrote Big Fish, to write the script for the new film, which is now in development. Rewatch the "Summer Nights" number from the original 1978 movie musical adaptation below!

Written by Aladdin scribe John August, the upcoming prequel will essentially serve as a Sandy and Danny origin story. "We already got the prequel, there was a whole song about it in Grease", a fan tweeted.

For those unfamiliar with Grease, let us fill you in on the story.

The original Grease-which itself was based on the 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey-starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as a greaser named Danny and a brainy transfer student named Sandy who strike up a romance over one fateful summer; star-crossed high school lovers who literally rode a flying auto into pop culture history. Do we really need to see the literal moment Danny and Sandy meet each other and their beach dates?

The song paints a picture of young, carefree love in the summer before Sandy and Danny found themselves expressing clashing school personas in social cliques at Rydell High School - Danny a greaser and Sandy an Australian innocent. As of now, it's unknown who will portray each character.

A sequel, Grease 2, was released in 1982 with Maxwell Caulfield and Michelle Pfeiffer; grossing just $15 million (the original made $40 million in just nineteen days). Back in 2016, Fox aired a live version of "Grease" starring Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens which won five Emmys.
